Have you ever spent a few minutes watching those memeful or quirky videos on TikTok? And, suddenly those few minutes turned to hours? And, before you know it, you’ve spent the whole day stuck to the screen? Believe me, I've had first hand experience and I can’t deny that it is extremely addicting. Pretty much every day of quarantine has been the same: wake up, tiktok, eat, tiktok, sleep, repeat. So, if you wanna turn your life around and finally start getting productive, then keep on reading.

First of all, if you've gotten this far, then congratulations! This is your first step to stopping your addiction. Dealing with your addiction may be challenging, but never impossible! Here, I will be sharing some tips to help you address your unhealthy relationship with TikTok.

Start with writing out a goal, more specifically, the ideal time you wanna spend on TikTok. Maybe you wanna go from 8 hours a day to 4. Maybe you wanna go from 4 hours a day to 3 and a half (every effort counts!). Or, maybe you don't know how much time you spend there at all (all you know is it might be too much). If you’re unaware of the time you scroll through the endless “For You” page, make it your first order of business to track it. See how much time you spend on the application and, from that point, gauge how much you want to lessen it.

Distract yourself from opening your TikTok. You could try out some new hobbies, or work on something you’re passionate about. Or, you know… work on those assignments you've been delaying for the past week. To get your mind off TikTok, do anything to keep yourself busy and productive.

Walk around in your garden, sit by your garage and breathe some fresh air, or stare at some trees— whatever makes you feel at peace. Do this silently without any devices or distractions. Notice how relaxing this is? Good! Sometimes, we all need to take a break from our gadgets and appreciate the beauty the world has to offer.

If you’ve noticed how much free time you have now and how much more productive you’ve been without TikTok, then maybe it’s time for you to say goodbye. Time to break up with the app and tell it “it’s not you, it’s me.” It’ll probably be hard but it’s for the best. At the end of the day, you've got to choose you and put your best interests ahead.

Now that you’ve finished reading, it’s time to put these words into action! You’ve already made progress by finishing this article so take the next step!
