The COVID-19 Pandemic has changed so many things especially the way we live. Work-life and school-life are so different now with the current status of the world — and it seems that it will remain different for a while. This April may be known as the month of jokes but, in honor of World Health Day, let’s keep in mind that there are many things that are not to be fooled with.
As cases continue to rise around the globe, we have to remember why it is important to be safe and to remain healthy in everyday life. Although we may not be directly affected by the virus, millions of patients are struggling along with their families who hope to be able to see and embrace them again. One thing’s for sure: a time like this is no time to be selfish.
That being said, here are a few things to take seriously not only this April but until these challenging moments are over. Being vaccinated does not exempt you from ignoring this new routine, keep in mind, prevention is always better than cure.
1. Wash your hands.
After interacting with anyone or any publicly used item, it is important to keep our hands clean. According to research, washing your hands in lukewarm water for 20 seconds reduces bacteria up to 99.9%. Your regular soap and water may not be able to kill harmful bacteria, but it definitely helps you shoo it away from your skin.
2. Wear a mask.
When out and running errands or working your 9 to 5, always wear a surgical mask or any mask the World Health Organization approves. The mask is not only for you but for those around you as well. Essential runs to the grocery store may require some conversation. By using a mask, you are able to prevent yourself and others from getting infected when either one of you is talking.
3. Stay at home.
Missing your friends and family has unfortunately become a struggle we are all too familiar with. This, however, does not give us the permission to be inconsiderate of others. The more the crowds, the more the virus spreads. As much as possible, stay at home. However, when in times where you truly need to be outside like at face-to-face work, keep physical social interaction at a minimum. Remember to stay six feet away.
While the pandemic has given us the time to realize and reflect more on our lives, it has also taken so much from us. However, in these less-than-pleasant times, we still have the power to influence change by making at least three right choices every day: to mask up, to wash up, and to stay home.
To borrow the words of Neil Armstrong, one simple mask for each human, one giant leap for humankind.
